Thibodeau ‘Coaches Every Dribble’

Two really good articles on Tom Thibodeau whose Timberwolves team beat the Denver Nuggets in a win-or-go-home game Wednesday night to clinch the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2004 (!). As the Western Conference’s 8th seed, Minnesota will square off with the Houston Rockets in Round 1. Thibs arrived in Minnesota after taking a year off after getting fired by the Bulls organization after 5 years despite a .647 winning percentage. Thibs treated his year-off like a sabbatical of sorts and traveled the country observing practices and studying different organizations. The year served as a period of self-reflection for him as well as he felt he might need to adjust his approach. The first article dives into his efforts to improve his communication with his players.

“You’re trying to build trust, so I think my job is to try to give them the best plan possible,” Thibodeau said. “And when there’s strategy and someone asks a question, I should be able to answer why we’re doing it that way. I think that’s all part of teaching and learning and communication. And sometimes when you’re talking to them, there should be a good understanding of the progression of what you’re doing, so when we see things in a game, they’re things that we’ve already gone through in practice. You never have it all figured out. You’re always trying to work at how can we do it better? How can we improve?”

“It’s about building a relationship, and I think you have to build trust and the only way you can build trust is through the truth,” Thibodeau said. “I think players respect that. You take it day by day. You try to be as honest as you can be. I think people respect honesty and work. And that’s what works.”
