How Kirby Smart Made Georgia the New Bama

Next Monday’s national championship between Alabama and Georgia offers a very interesting subplot in that it matches teacher against pupil. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart worked under Alabama head coach Nick Saban for 11 years at 3 different stops with the last 8 seasons spent as Bama’s defensive coordinator. Saban’s influence on Smart, however, extends far beyond the gridiron with Kirby mimicking, and even enhancing, some of Saban’s recruiting and organizational tactics.

When Smart accepted the job, McGarity didn’t issue marching orders. He asked questions. What did Smart now need from the administration to build a championship program? “He needed to educate us,” McGarity says, “about what it meant to go big-time.” In other words, Georgia wanted to Sabanize.
