A Philadelphia Legend

Last week, St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia) coach Speedy Morris reached rarified air, collecting his 1,000th victory in 50 seasons at the high school and college levels. Starting from the beginning of his career, Morris has worked at Roman Catholic (14 seasons), Penn Charter (2), La Salle (women’s team for 2), La Salle (men’s team for 15) and St. Joseph’s Prep (now in his 17th year). Morris is a Philadelphia legend whose coaching tree has infiltrated the entire hoops scene there in Philly (read the article linked below for details).

Billy Lange got to La Salle at age 27 — “I’m coaching Donnie Carr, Rasual Butler, Victor Thomas — and we are doing the most basic elementary school drills. The first day, Speedy just said to me, assume they know nothing. I’ve grown to understand he wasn’t meaning anything to do with their intelligence.”
