The NBA’s Pick-And-Roll Game

Cool article from The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor on the role of the pick & roll in today’s NBA landscape. Really interesting stat in the third paragraph showing how much more prevalent the pick & roll is now than ten years ago. Coaches might find most of the concepts discussed rather elementary, but there’s good stuff nonetheless (I particularly liked the way Drew Halen approaches pick & roll reads with the players he works with).

“My reads are always determined by [how] the bigs on the defense [like to guard the pick-and-roll].”
-If that big man rolls down the rim, like the classic pick-and-rolls we’ve witnessed for decades, Williams said he’ll go “north-to-south.” But when that big can shoot and he pops, it becomes an ‘east-to-west’ game.”
