Enjoyed this oral history on Barry Alvarez’s first several years at Wisconsin. When Alvarez arrived, Wisconsin was the worst program in the Big Ten by a wide margin. It didn’t take Alvarez long to turn things around as the Badgers went to the Rose Bowl in his fourth season. The first portion of this story is definitely worth a read as there’s some really good “turnaround” thoughts in this one from Alvarez.
“Barry basically said we ain’t won shit yet, so how are you just going to say we’re going to win the Big Ten all of a sudden? You appreciate his enthusiasm. But Barry had just been through it a few times winning at Iowa and winning at Notre Dame. We hadn’t experienced college winning. He set the right perspective, like let’s not even go there with all that because this is not happening in the first year. We’re working towards that.”
