Drafting Smart Was Years in the Making

This story of how the Celtics ended up selecting Marcus Smart with the sixth pick of the 2014 NBA Draft is one of my favorite draft pieces I’ve read. Their evaluation of Smart went all the way back to two and a half years before the draft and Ainge and his scouting staff reveal what stood out to them.

“We’re asking about things that are harder to see, like what kind of teammate he is, how coachable he is, what his work habits are,” Lewin said. “Is this a player who has committed himself to improving his weaknesses?”
