How Mike Leach Rebuilt Wazzu Football

Really good article liked below on the rebuilding job Mike Leach has done since taking over at Washington State in 2012. Leach inherited a program that had gone just 9-40 in the four years prior to his arrival. Following two consecutive bowl appearances, Washington State checked in at No. 24 in the preseason AP poll, giving the Cougars a preseason ranking for the first time since 2002. The turnaround has perhaps taken a year or two longer than people expected and the article delves into that subject a bit by focusing on the recruiting class that is largely to thank for the turnaround. There are some terrific thoughts from Leach on generating buy-in. If you have not read Leach’s bio Swing Your Sword, I suggest you do so. My notes on the book are linked below

“This is the toughest thing, and the thing I’m most proud of them for,” Leach says. “They had to buy in and have the same vision as the coaches did, and had to persevere at a time where there were not a lot of great examples to follow.”
