How 19-0 Vermont Was Built

Really good read on culture, recruiting and a program’s evolution through the lens of Vermont’s 2016 NCAA Tournament appearance, their first since 2012. Vermont’s first round loss to Purdue marked John Becker’s second NCAA trip since taking over as head coach and it’s interesting to see how much the program has changed between the two trips. When the Catamounts won the America East in 2012, they were a power flex team relying on New England products. This year’s team ran an unstoppable ball screen motion and featured players from all over the country. Despite the changes in personnel and strategy, Becker didn’t get away from his program’s standards and values. I appreciate Chris Oliver of Basketball Immersion for passing this article along.

Without changing the program’s core principles of toughness and defense, UVM widened its recruiting net, overhauled its offense and overcame injuries and transfers to continue to remain a mid-major power out of the America East Conference.
